History of ILRC

Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. (ILRC) is a consumer controlled, not-for-profit agency that provides community-based services for persons with all  types of disabilities.

ILRC was incorporated June 28, 1996 by a group of citizens with disabilities and others concerned about disability issues.  This group attained the support of local legislators and agency administrators and began the work of opening a center, located in Jefferson City.  This center was one of nine (9) new centers to join the already existing twelve (12), in the state of Missouri.

Funding is primarily provided by a state grant from Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.  ILRC also generates funding from donations by local businesses and by applying for other grants.

Philosophy of ILRC

All ILRC programs are consumer-controlled.  Consumers make all decisions in individual and group activities and staff assists and/or advocates as requested.  In minimizing reliance on others, consumers learn to manage their own lives and make key decisions, which increases their independence and move toward self-determination.

People with disabilities know their needs best and have the right to make decisions regarding their daily lives.

Mission of ILRC

Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. promotes a barrier-free environment, free of both architectural and attitudinal barriers that place limits on the independence of persons with disabilities.  ILRC encourages greater independence for persons with disabilities within our community.
